The Cupertino giant just showed that it is not reluctant in experimenting new design elements by introducing the iPhone X’s ‘notch’. And now, there has been a rumor going on that Apple is planning to take things a step further as it could launch a ‘foldable’ iPhone by sometime in the year 2020.
According to CNBC, a Merrill Lynch analyst told clients, “We expect the iPhones this fall to be largely unchanged for the OLED versions although size changes have proved to be a catalyst in the past.” He added, “Our checks suggest that Apple is working with suppliers on a foldable phone (that potentially could double up as a tablet) for launch in 2020.”
Interestingly, last year, Apple filed a patent application having a description, “an electronic device [that] may have a flexible portion that allows [it] to be folded.”
Not just that, the company is also reportedly working with LG, the firm that previously unveiled its rollable OLED TV and extended its partnership with Sony to supply foldable OLED displays for the future smartphones.
As of yet, we’re unknown that what in particular Apple has in store for the users. Like, if the whole device would be foldable or just a specific part of it. Or in what ways would the folding make the device handier.
Also, not forgetting that it is still a rumor and there hasn’t been any official statement in this regard. Apple has been asked to give some highlights on whether it would be adopting the foldable design or not, in anytime soon. However, the company hasn’t responded yet.
We would let you know as soon as we hear something.
