Samsung has been making waves in news media outlets owing to continuous speculation around the launch of the foldable phone, Samsung Galaxy X. Seems like Apple has taken the cue.
Reportedly, Apple is also entering the arena of foldable smartphones. But interestingly it has partnered with LG not Samsung. Samsung is currently the leader in providing OLED screens and it has been partnering with Apple for the provision of OLED screens. We all know Samsung makes billions of dollars through its licensing agreement with Apple. Every iPhone X sale is expected to give Samsung over $100 from Apple.
In the flexible OLED’s department, LG has been making strides and has a great potential, which is why Apple is exploring a partnership with LG this time, leaving Samsung behind. According to a report from The Bell, Apple will use the flexible OLED screens supplied by LG to come up with foldable smartphones. Yep, you have read that right!
The Bell’s sources have further said that Apple will be looking to launch this phone in 2020. There has been so much speculation about foldable and flexible smartphones to be launched in the upcoming years but we haven’t yet seen any smartphone with flexible display launched. Now with the rumors that Apple is also interested in the same space, it is speculated that Samsung and LG will increase their pace and might come up with a foldable and flexible screen device quite soon. As soon as 2018.
Earlier, there were reports that since Apple has a vested interested in flexible OLEDs, it will be investing $2.6B in supporting LGs new plant. The deal has not yet finalized.
