An Indian school book lists Pervez Musharraf among ‘great personalities’

A grade 3 book at a private Indian school in Jabalpur has included General (R) Pervez Musharraf’s portrait among six great personalities.

However, his name has now been withdrawn from the book following an uproar from the District Bar Association (DBA) of Jabalpur, India. The inclusion came as a shock because the former military chief is considered as the main reason behind the Kargil War – a point that the DBA did not feel shy to mention:

“This is highly objectionable. Under the Musharraf regime in Pakistan, the Kargil War took place, in which many Indian soldiers lost their lives.”

Officials are regarding this ‘irresponsibility’ as a folly on the part of the state and the education department and even went on to regard this as “playing with the future of the children”.

The DBA is seeking legal action against the writer and publisher of the book, who claim that the book was in accordance with the syllabus of National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT).

The book has now been withdrawn from the school curriculum.
