AMD’s ThreadRipper to rival Intel’s Core i9 with its 16 cores, 32 threads

Planning to take on Intel’s newly released Core i9 chips, AMD has officially announced its high-end desktop chipset X399 running AMD ThreadRipper that comes with beastly 16 cores and 32 processing threads.

After Intel’s pretty impressive performance at the first day of Computex 2017, the second-day show was mainly stolen by AMD for it revealed its potential rival against Intel’s Core i9. Following the initial announcement earlier this month, there had been quite a few rumors about their specifications. It, however, happened for the first time that the ThreadRipper processors were revealed by AMD live.

There would be multiple AMD ThreadRipper processors with the top one boasting 16 cores. On top of the 16 cores and 32 threads, these would also come with as much as 64 lanes of PCIe 3.0 lanes, compared to the Intel’s new Core X processors which, at maximum, are offering 44 lanes. The said X399 chipset processor will also have quad channel DDR4 support for 8 DIMM RAMs.

The PCIe lanes offered on the ThreadRipper would enable the enthusiasts to connect as much as 4 GPUs. While on the show, AMD connected four Vega GPUs with the processor and performed several performance tests showing remarkable results. AMD also announced that it was planning to launch its new graphics cards, Vega, later in July this year.

As far as the pricing and processing frequencies of these processors are concerned, AMD didn’t announce them. However, it is expected that the processors would go on sale by either July or August this year.

Held every year in Taiwan, Computex is an event of global scale which is often referred as the world’s largest computing show. Every year computer giants from around the globe gather to market their best products on this forum. Last year, Intel announced the World’s first ever 10 core processor ready for consumer sale while this year, it went on and announced the world’s very first 18-core monster.
