The skyrocketing performance of the company has pushed Amazon into building a second headquarter for its employees. Soon after the company made the announcement, the cities were quick to offer them space – because which Mayor wouldn’t want 50,000 high-paying jobs and a $5 billion of investment.
Yesterday, the company made the announcement that it was searching for a suitable city in North America for building its second headquarter building. Amazon made the announcement, listing a complete set of properties and requirements that an ideal Amazon’s second HQ city might have. It then asked cities to pitch their applications to the company. The company says that it wants a city in which there are a million people from diverse backgrounds and good graduate schools to fill up the vacancies of 50,000 high-paying jobs that it is going to bring with it.
The company is going to bring investment of as much as over $5 billion worth to the city in which its new headquarters would be built and the company wants a huge 8 million square feet of office space for it. “In addition to Amazon’s direct hiring and investment, construction and ongoing operation of Amazon HQ2 is expected to create tens of thousands of additional jobs and tens of billions of dollars in additional investment in the surrounding community,” Amazon said in a blogpost.
As soon as the company published the “vacancy” posting, different cities started to pitch their “portfolios”. Even before the business day ended, notable cities like Chicago, Dallas, San Diego and Michigan had already vested their interest.
It would be worth mentioning here that Amazon is leading the pack in Seattle when it comes to providing quality job opportunities and changing the demographics of a city since it was founded. Jeff Bezos, the company’s founder, just recently made it to becoming the World’s most richest person, though for a short while. The company makes for the biggest employer in the city right now and employs nearly 8 million square feet of office space for it.
