Windows 7 still remains the popular choice for Windows users although Microsoft gave various opportunities to its users to move to Windows 10 for free.
Right now, Windows 10 also has a strong hand in the market and it stands at the second position in terms of market share. 29.09% Windows users are on Windows 10.
Microsoft has put all of its efforts on the latest operating system which is why whenever a vulnerability it spotted it is fixed on Windows 10, other versions are considered later for that. Using an older version of Windows operating system is leaving millions of computers at risk. There have been cases whenever Microsoft has fixed issues in Windows 10 but has decided to ignore Windows 7, and 8 without security patches.
The same issue was brought to light by Google Project Zero team as well, the researchers said,
“Microsoft is known for introducing a number of structural security improvements and sometimes even ordinary bug fixes only to the most recent Windows platform,”
He added,
“This creates a false sense of security for users of the older systems, and leaves them vulnerable to software flaws which can be detected merely by spotting subtle changes in the corresponding code in different versions of Windows.”
“Not only does it leave some customers exposed to attacks, but it also visibly reveals what the attack vectors are, which works directly against user security,” he added.
Microsoft did go ahead to respond to these statements, they told The Register,
“Windows has a customer commitment to investigate reported security issues, and proactively update impacted devices as soon as possible.”
“Additionally, we continually invest in defense-in-depth security, and recommend customers use Windows 10 and the Microsoft Edge browser for the best protection.”
