Airbus plans to test flying cars by the end of 2017

Airbus has announced that it plans to hold tests for flying cars by the end of 2017. The announcement was made by Airbus’s chief executive, Tom Enders in a technology conference being held in Germany.

It was already confirmed by Airbus that it has been working on a “vertical take-off and landing” technology which will allow vehicles to pick up and drop passengers in congested urban areas. It is expected that Airbus will start commercial production of these vehicles by 2021.

Airbus and Uber are both interested in this technology and have previously expressed their commitment towards this newer mode of transportation. Speaking about Airbus’s progress in flying car tech, Enders said:

“One hundred years ago, urban transport went underground, now we have the technological wherewithal to go above ground. We are in an experimentation phase, we take this development very seriously. If we ignore these developments, we will be pushed out of important segments of the business.”

Airbus plans to hold first tests for such a vehicle by the end of 2017. If everything goes as planned, consumers will be able to see a prototype within a couple of years.
