A hacker group is trying to hack into the network of telecom and energy companies

A new hacker group has emerged on the radar. Being referred to as Hexane, this new hacker group is hacking specifically the telecom and energy companies.

The group was first identified more than a year ago. More recently, the hacker group has increased its impact and has expanded its circle of operations. Currently, the group was found hacking into the different companies from the telecom industry, Tech Crunch has reported. Dragos, the company which first identified it, mentions that the hackers could be trying to find their way into the network of oil an gas companies, by using telecom companies as “stepping stones”.

“Dragos observed this group targeting oil and gas companies in the Middle East, including Kuwait as a primary operating region. Additionally, and unlike other activity groups Dragos tracks, HEXANE also targeted telecommunication providers in the greater Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa, potentially as a stepping stone to network-focused man-in-the-middle and related attacks,” the company mentioned in the blog.

Currently, the hacker group is looking at an unconventional of hacking into the network of big industries by exploiting the telecom industries on which they operated. Dragos mentioned that there are some other hacking groups as well which first target third-party entities and then hack into their primary targets. Dragos mentions that it has found Hexane targeting oil and gas companies in Africa and the Middle East, including those in Kuwait.

As the world readies itself to embrace the far-reaching benefits of IT and its associated platforms, risks mainly related to data privacy and protection have also started to emerge. Companies which store the user data are entitled with the task to protect this information through state-of-the-art tools and technologies.
