Apple beats Qualcomm to win two patent rulings

Qualcomm

In Apple and Qualcomm’s on-going patent battle, it appears that the smartphone manufacturing giant is taking a lead over the popular electronic chip-maker.

Apple and Qualcomm have been embroiled in a legal battle since earlier this year when Apple sued Qualcomm for overcharging them for the use of basic patents. Qualcomm sued them back for making false statements. In the months that followed, the battle intensified as the chip-maker tried to get Apple smartphones banned from being sold in the US. However, that plan didn’t work out well for them. Big smartphone companies sided with Apple and left Qualcomm to fend for itself. Now the scoreboard reads Apple – 2, Qualcomm – 0.

According to Apple Insider, a US District Court has ruled that Qualcomm cannot collect Intellectual Property (IP) royalties on Apple’s manufacturing partners until a proper amount is determined. Following this decision, Qualcomm’s immediate task would be to calculate how much money it needs to demand in royalties from Apple and its partners.

That was just the first patent ruling. In the second ruling, the court denied Qualcomm’s motion to drop Apple’s lawsuits. It doesn’t end here. Qualcomm is also being asked to prove how Apple caused IP infringement in all the locations it is suing the company including China, Japan, Taiwan, and the UK.

However, these rulings do not mean the Apple-Qualcomm battle is over. There are a lot more ugly episodes to come.
