Google redesigns search Ads; removes side Ads in favor of top and bottom only

The face of internet search, Google, is going to make a design overhaul for its search Ads by replacing the ads from the sides in favor of only top and bottom.

Home to more than 50k searches every second, Google is the most-visited website on the planet and even the slightest of changes it makes to its search page can affect millions of users. The company has now announced to make some crucial changes to the position of its search ads which is the primary source of income for the company.

“We’ve been testing this layout for a long time so some people might see it on a very small number of commercial queries.” said Google in a statement given to TheVerge. “We’ll continue to make tweaks, but this is designed for highly commercial queries where the layout is able to provide more relevant results for people searching and better performance for advertisers.”

First reported by Sem Post, Google has confirmed that it will stop placing ads on the sidebars. Instead, it will opt for 4 ads on the top of the search page and 3 on the bottom, leaving the sidebar open for Google’s Product listings. The fourth additional ad placement on the top will be used for specific lucrative searches like hotels or car insurance etc. Before this change, the company used a combination of the top, bottom, as well as the right side of the page to display Ads.

While not a massive change, Google is still the king of online ads, earning a mind-boggling $67.39 billion in 2015 from advertisements alone. So any change Google makes can prove to have a huge impact.
