Sony Extends Playstation Plus Memberships By 5 Days After Global Outage

The PlayStation Network (PSN) was down for around 18 hours on Friday and Saturday due to a worldwide outage. Sony said on Sunday that all PlayStation Plus customers would get an extra five days of service instantly.

After experiencing an operational problem, the network services have completely recovered. On Sunday, the Japanese electronics and entertainment giant posted to X, “We apologize for the inconvenience and thank the community for their patience.” Still, it did not clarify the reason for the outage.

The outage started late Friday and prevented users from signing in, playing games, or using the online store. The corporation announced that PSN was back up and running by Saturday night.

The PlayStation Network, which serves millions of customers across the globe, is an essential service for Sony’s game sector.

As per Downdetector.com, which gathers status updates from many sources, including users, it was estimated that 7,939 users in the US and 7,336 users in the UK were affected by the outage at its peak on Saturday afternoon.

“PlayStation is back up again after being down for a whole day. “Sony at least saved millions of Gamers their Sunday right after ruining their Saturday,” a user wrote on X.

Sony has seen more significant disruptions in service before. During the 2014 Christmas season, the PlayStation Network was taken offline for multiple days due to a hack. A more significant incident occurred in 2011 when the personal information of approximately 77 million users was exposed. This incident prompted a month-long closure and an investigation by regulatory bodies.
