Federal Authorities Confirm Blocking Access To X

ISLAMABAD: During a meeting of the National Assembly, parliamentary secretary Sajid Mehdi revealed that the social media site X had been blocked.

He said that no other country keeps an eye on fake news as closely as Pakistan does. He also said that 86,000 SIM cards were blocked for actions that were against the government.

The Prime Minister has established a task force to deal with the matter, and Mehdi mentioned that the Electronic Crimes Act will soon be changed.

Legislator Asia Naz Tanoli has issued a letter demanding swift measures to halt the propagation of disinformation. She talked about how harmful fake news is and urged people to take steps to stop it.

Mehdi responded by labeling false news as a threat to national security and outlining government initiatives to combat it, such as banning Twitter and closing gaps in the 2016 Electronic Crimes Act.

Nuzhat Sadiq, a member of parliament, also said that fake news hurts the country’s institutions and reputation and called for quick action.
