OpenAI, in collaboration with nonprofit organization Common Sense Media, announced on Wednesday the launch of a free teacher training course. The course aims to simplify AI and prompt engineering, making these concepts easier for students to grasp.
With the release of its ChatGPT chatbot in November 2022, OpenAI sparked a generative AI frenzy and made it one of the fastest-growing applications in the world. Now, the company is ramping up its efforts to promote the chatbot’s positive role in education.
Generative AI, trained on massive amounts of data, may generate entirely new humanlike content, assisting users in writing term papers, doing science homework, and even novels.
When ChatGPT came out in the middle of the school year, teachers were shocked to find out that it could be used to cheat and plagiarise. This caused a backlash, and some schools banned the app.
Under the leadership of former Coursera CEO Leah Belsky, OpenAI—which has received an investment of $157 billion from Microsoft and other backers—has assembled a committed team to promote what it calls the ethical application of artificial intelligence in the field of education and training.
According to Belsky’s statement, “My goal in this role is to put AI into the hands of every student and every teacher… and also give them the skills to learn how to do it responsibly and effectively.”
Belsky said that “very, very high” numbers of students are using ChatGPT and that most parents are comfortable with it because they think AI skills are important for future jobs.
The training course teaches teachers from kindergarten to twelfth grade how to use the ChatGPT robot product for different educational purposes, like making lesson plans or streamlining department meetings. Additionally, it is the first product that OpenAI has made in collaboration with Common Sense Media, and you can find it on their website.
