Most popular messaging applications now offer encrypted and secure texting, but there is one that stands out as the most secure. Signal is an open-source messaging app that replaces phone numbers with usernames and offers features like self-destructing messages, the ability to modify messages, backups of chats, group chats, and more. You can get the app’s code on GitHub.
In an effort to make the app more appealing to individuals looking for a new group conference/call solution, the platform has added shareable meeting connections, which Signal refers to as “Call Links.” The feature is identical to WhatsApp and Apple’s FaceTime integration. Users can set up a meeting link and invite anyone on Signal to join their audio or video conversation with a single tap.
To start a call with more than one participant on Signal in the past, the host had to make a new group, invite everyone to it, and then start the call from there. The new Call Link approach basically eliminates the need to form a separate group just to start a call. Anyone can share a call link outside of Signal, but obviously, everyone who wants to join the call needs to have an active Signal account.
There is a new option to “Create a Call Link” at the very top of the Calls section in the bottom panel, which you can use to create a call connection. Next, you’ll have the option to assign a title to your call and enable or disable admin approval. Call Links are available on PC, iOS, and Android versions of Signal.
New Emoji Reactions and Raise Hand Feature Added
Call Links can also be reused, which is quite helpful for teams that use the platform for weekly check-ins. Call hosts will be able to uninvite anyone from their meetings and even block them so they can’t join again. Up to 50 people can join a group call on Signal. Keep in mind that for the last month, Call Links has been available in beta.
On the other hand, a feature similar to Google Meet can now be implemented into calls, allowing participants to indicate their desire to talk by raising their hands. Additionally, Signal calls will soon have emoji reactions, so you may express yourself without typing or speaking.
