In response to the escalating health concerns linked to the worsening smog conditions, the authorities in Punjab have implemented revised school timings to protect the well-being of students. The Punjab Environment Protection Department has issued urgent guidelines for schools and colleges, urging them to implement necessary measures in response to persistently high air pollution levels.

On Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024, the Punjab Environmental Protection Authority unveiled a revised school timetable. Beginning on October 28th and continuing through January 31st, 2025, educational institutions will initiate their classes at 8:45 AM. To safeguard students, school administrations are being urged to conduct assemblies indoors to minimize their exposure to outdoor air.

It is also advised that residents refrain from venturing outdoors, keep windows and doors closed to reduce air pollution, and wear a face mask when venturing outdoors. In order to mitigate pollution, vehicle owners are encouraged to maintain their vehicles in excellent functioning order. For instance, as part of these regulations, all pyrotechnic activities are prohibited until the end of January 2025.

According to recent research conducted by IQAir, Lahore has once again established itself as the most polluted city on a global scale, with an Air Quality Index of 193. This highlights the urgent matter of air quality and its prospective influence on the community’s health.

Medical professionals are particularly concerned, advising those with respiratory issues, including asthma and allergies, to implement additional measures to safeguard their well-being amid the ongoing air pollution emergency.
