WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging application in the world. Back in 2014, when Facebook announced that it was planning to acquire WhatsApp for a whopping $19 billion, people had no idea that WhatsApp would add such a big revenue to an already established portfolio of Facebook. Many analysts were of the view that Facebook has its own messaging service and wasn’t sure what WhatsApp would bring to the table.
At that time, the number of messages being sent via the messaging platform was about a third of what it is today. When Facebook bought the WhatsApp, it had 465 million monthly active users and today surprisingly the most popular messaging service in the world connects more than 1.5 billion people. According to the report in Statista, more than 29 million messages were sent via WhatsApp in 60 seconds on average in 2017. As of May 2018, about 1.5 billion users are sending 65 billion messages via the WhatsApp mobile app and web client per day. That’s such a tremendous growth by any messaging app.
However, WhatsApp still doesn’t bring in ad dollars, but the acquisition did give Facebook the most popular messaging service in the world.
