The Punjab government has unveiled plans to deploy 400 electric buses as part of a comprehensive environmental program aimed at improving air quality and tackling Lahore’s persistent smog issues.
Announced during a climate-focused news conference, Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb emphasized the initiative’s role in a broader anti-smog strategy designed to combat the city’s chronic air pollution.
One of the main causes of smog in Lahore is the emissions from regular cars, but the electric buses will help reduce this problem significantly. The government of Punjab has launched a 10-year anti-smog plan that incorporates both technological innovations and legislative reforms to address the environmental catastrophe. This effort is one component of that plan. In addition to lowering emissions, the buses will hasten the shift to greener, more sustainable forms of public transport.
Beginning in January 2025, 27 electric buses will make their way to Lahore, and by the end of the year, 400 electric buses will have been deployed around the city. This is part of a larger initiative to convert 5.2 million motorcycles in Lahore to electric ones, which will help reduce pollution and make the city’s transportation system more environmentally friendly.
Smog has been an ongoing issue in Lahore, particularly during the winter months, and the government’s plan to minimize it includes the installation of electric buses. The government has been active on multiple fronts, including the regulation of brick kilns, the promotion of ecologically friendly agricultural methods, and the closure of smoke-emitting companies.
The electric buses should make a big difference in Lahore’s air quality, which has had a problem with smog for a long time. In line with the government’s objective of lowering smog by 38% compared to last year, the program maintains efforts to substantially reduce pollution levels going forward.
