Over 20% of world’s population will access 5G in 2023, says Ericsson

The globally renowned Telecom equipment manufacturer, Ericsson has predicted about 1 billion 5G subscriptions by the end of 2023 in its new Mobility report. This number is larger than 20% of the world’s population.

According to the semiannual Mobility report, the year 2023 will be a global breakthrough for emerging 5G technology as the number of subscription will be doubled from 2022 and will cross 1 billion users. The report also estimates that Asia will be the region with half of the 5G subscription by the end of 2023.

Patrick Cerwall, head of strategic marketing at Erricson says that the 4G LTE networks will be the dominant mobile access technology in the world, by the end of the year 2017. However, it is expected to get a boost with 5.5 billion subscriptions which will cover more than 85 percent of the world’s population by the end of 2023.

The report also elaborates that 5G upgrade will be adapted with a rapid speed as compared to earlier adoption rate. The technology is all set to be initially released for densely populated urban areas. Initial 5G deployments around the world will including US, South Korea, Japan, and China.

Eric also said in its report that the number of mobile data users is increasing. By the year 2023, 110 exabytes of data per month is expected to travel over mobile. This is equal to 5.5 million years of streaming HD video each month. Meanwhile, Pakistan is also seeing a rapid increase of 3G and 4G LTE subscribers who have reached around 46 million, during last month.
