Different platforms around the world are working to empower women to work and to excel in the field of IT and technology. 10Pearls, a digital transformation firm based out of Karachi, just recently, held women in tech focus group to increase the participation of women in tech in Pakistan. The number of women in tech in Pakistan stands at an alarming 12% only. In order to step forward and support women, just in March of this year, 10Pearls held the first women’s only hackathon and testathon called WomenTech.
10Pearls hosted the 2nd open meetup of #WomenInTechPK on July 8, 2017, at its office in Parsa Tower, Karachi. The meeting was focused on the development of women in the IT industry.
#WomenInTechPK community consists of women that create opportunities and meaningful dialogue in favor of empowerment of women in IT. In the meeting, it was discussed why women of the country are lacking in IT skills. According to participants, the biggest challenge was a lack of networking and mentorship at the educational level for young females.
On the occasion the founder of #WomenInTechPK, Faiza Yousuf said, “The group has shown the true power of a vibrant community and we have plans to tap our volunteer resources to start with formal and informal training, mentorship and content creation.”
Sana Hussain, Senior HR Manager at 10Pearls said,
“Events such as these are a much needed massive push to build a strong network of women in STEM. Organizations like 10Pearls can collaborate with women based groups to inspire and engage the next generation of female technologists.”
Facebook has also recently signed an agreement with Women’s Digital League (WDL) to train Pakistani women and to promote home-based women entrepreneurs.
